The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and private firm DMT Collateral Management have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to construct a large‑scale grain storage facility in the Upper West Region. The project will see silos erected in Wa, the regional capital, with a target completion date set for August 2027.
Designed to hold 21,000 metric tonnes of cereal crops, the hub is expected to slash post‑harvest losses and expand Ghana’s overall storage capacity. By providing a dedicated hub for the Feed Ghana Programme, the site will also help maintain an emergency grain reserve for times of crisis.
Financing and Capacity Building
DMT Collateral Management will spearhead the technical and commercial aspects of the venture, working with a joint project implementation committee to keep the timetable on track. The equipment and construction phase is underpinned by an export‑credit facility of roughly €4.8 million, complemented by an additional investment of about US$5 million.
Paul Minlah, Managing Director of DMT Collateral Management, described the emergency reserve component as a “hospital bin” that will supply food during emergencies.
Beyond the physical infrastructure, the project will nurture local expertise. Training programmes are slated for National Service personnel, Feed Ghana Brigadiers and Ghanaian technicians, covering silo operations, grain drying, quality control and routine maintenance.
Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku highlighted that Ghana’s storage network remains insufficient despite rising rice and maize output. He noted that the National Food Buffer Stock Company can purchase produce but lacks the warehousing space to hold it, a gap the Wa facility aims to fill.

The Wa silo is positioned as the first phase of a national rollout, with the government eyeing between 15 and 20 similar installations across the country. Opoku urged DMT to move swiftly so the Ministry can align its activities with the project’s schedule.
In a related move, Omanbapa AgriTech Limited supplied promotional material for the 42nd National Farmers’ Day, set for 4 December 2026 in Sunyani, Bono Region. The minister praised the company’s commitment and called on other organisations to back the celebration, underscoring the sector’s collaborative spirit.
