The festive season now has an official map. The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has unveiled the calendar for December in GH 2026, with more than 150 events registered across the country so far.
Accra accounts for more than 100 of them. The season runs from December 1, 2026 to January 3, 2027, as part of Ghana's wider Black Star Experience tourism drive.
'Ghana to the World'
The calendar was launched at Labadi Beach Hotel, bringing together players from tourism, culture and the creative arts. This year's theme is "Ghana to the World".
Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie acknowledged that the "Detty December" tag is popular, especially with young people. But she urged stakeholders to spend less time debating the name and more time encouraging people to experience Ghana's culture, heritage and hospitality.
She described December as a homecoming for Ghanaians abroad, Africans in the diaspora and friends of Ghana. Success, she said, should be measured by the economic opportunities it creates for local businesses, from tour operators and hoteliers to musicians, fashion designers and artisans.
A new continental festival
The Minister also announced that Ghana is working with the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) to host the first African Festival of Arts, Culture and Creatives (AFESTACC), from December 9 to 12, 2026.
The festival is expected to draw creatives and stakeholders from across Africa and the diaspora.
A nudge to organisers
GTA CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto called on event organisers to give Ghanaian performers and creatives prominent roles, fair pay and real exposure to international audiences.
Businesses were also urged to put service, safety and reasonable pricing first, and visitors were encouraged to explore beyond Accra across all 16 regions.
With BHIM Festival, artiste-led concerts and a brand-new continental festival already on the cards, this December is shaping up to be a busy one.
